Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s Joke

Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s Joke

He’s a funny man.

This joke was told by Desmond Tutu, about Desmond Tutu at the launch of his book; the illustrated ‘Children of God: Storybook Bible‘ today at the Cape Town book fair in the CTICC.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu
Archbishop Desmond Tutu. What an amazing man. He hugged me!

“When I died, like it was expected,” Tutu looked at the crowd with a small shrug, “I went to Heaven.” The crowd laughed at the good-natured way he said this, like he’d told us the sky was blue. Humble, but obvious.

He continued: “But then when I arrived at the Pearly Gates, St Peter said to me No! I must go to a warmer place, you know. So, I went there.” He adjusted his glasses, “Then a few days later, St Peter heard a bang, bang, banging at Heaven’s gate. He went to go check, and he saw that it was the Devil knocking.
“St Peter says to him, ‘Ja jong, what are you doing here?!’ The Devil replied, ‘Since you sent Tutu down to the warmer place, he’s been causing too much trouble! I came here to ask for political asylum.”

Everyone roared with laughter, and Tutu laughed delightedly too.
